My niece Cassie spent the recent MLK holiday weekend in Boulder. It was her first-ever trip to Colorado.
Her Centennial State junket—which just happened to coincide with Enedina’s 21st birthday —began late Friday evening when Enedina picked Cassie up at DIA and ended some sixty hours later when Monica and I dropped her off at the airport to get back to the Bay Area Monday afternoon.
Mark graciously hosted Cassie’s weekend getaway at his cool—but small—apartment just north of Pearl Street. His one-bedroom pad is quite comfortable for one person or perhaps two, but it isn’t really built for five (Monica and I rolled into town early Saturday afternoon), but we managed.
In the two-plus days she spent in Boulder, Cassie took in a tour of the University of Colorado, drove by the home of murdered child beauty pageant contestant JonBenet Ramsey, took part in Enedina’s 21st birthday celebration at the Med (I’m certain you can follow their Boulder bar tour on their respective Facebook pages), hiked up in Chatauqua Park, and had dinner at the Fischers’ Niwot home, where she dominated one of her uncles in a game of “Apples to Apples.”
And yet, what easily should have been the signature moment of her trip—having her photo taken in front of the “Mork and Mindy” house—was lost when Cassie simply shrugged her shoulders when Monica asked her if she knew who Mork and Mindy were. Some people’s kids. Sheesh.
One of the more surprising moments of the visit came when Cassie declared not once, but twice, that Crocs, those funky rubber shoes with the holes in them, should cease to exist. What made these statements so bold is that they were uttered in Boulder County, the heart of Crocs country, in front of the Pearl Street Crocs store, which just happens to be a stone’s throw away from the Crocs corporate headquarters over in Niwot.
If there’s anyone walking around with a Jibbitz on her back these days, it’s my niece Cassie, so be sure to keep your distance if you’re in her company.
Nanoo Nanoo.

Love it! I have never commented like this on the World Wide Web. I feel pretty cool. I must say that weekend was pretty much awesome. Looking back – it makes me sad it ended so soon. Looks like I will need to make a trip out to NorCal!
