A Sunday evening a while back I was shooting some drone video of the Interstate 25 construction in Pueblo. It was a fruitless undertaking, so I made my way over to the nearby ballfields at the Runyon Sports Complex to try to salvage the outing. The ballpark was deserted, so I unpacked the drone in the empty parking lot.
The Runyon complex was named after one of Pueblo’s favorite sons, Damon Runyon, the renowned journalist/playwright/poet, in 1948. Locals are quick to share that Babe Ruth once played an exhibition game at what was then County Park in 1938. And that the site was also home to the Pueblo Dodgers, a farm team of Major League Baseball’s Brooklyn Dodgers. After being nearly shut down in the late 1990s, it’s now home to six baseball and softball diamonds where the local kids play ball and is warmly regarded by many Pueblooans who either grew up playing there, or had their kids play there.
I’ve never played an inning at Runyon myself, but having photographed my share of games there, I can say it’s a great place to take in a baseball game.
So anyway, I had the place to myself, perfect for flying a drone but rather eerie in that there wasn’t a soul was around the usually bustling place, especially during summer. After spending about 20 minutes flying over and around Hobbs Field, I sent the drone over to Andenucio field, yawed back towards the parking lot, and took a few photos of the complex. I managed to get five of the site’s six fields–Andenucio, Corsentino, DiOrio, Salas, and Hobbs– in the frame from a height of about 150 feet, or a high pop fly.
