If Superman were to bound over Pueblo’s tallest buildings, instead of leaping over some sky-scrapping corporate tower or pyramid, chances are he’d be hopping over some sort of low-income or senior housing. The city’s five tallest structures are dedicated that cause. The Man of Steel was would undoubtedly be drawn to the 122-foot tall Mesa Tower. Built in 1976, it’s the fifth tallest building in the Steel City and the tallest dwelling on city’s south side.
I recently flew the drone over Mesa Tower on a whim, and was surprised to discover the layered, semi-symetrical, hexagon pattern of its roof while getting in some “stick time” down near the Arkansas River. The perspective reminded me a bit of the scene from Hitchcock’s “North By Northwest” where Cary Grant’s Roger Thornhill skulks away from the United Nations Headquarters after Lester Townsend’s unfortunate and rather public demise.
But only a little bit. The Mesa Tower isn’t exactly an architectural wonder. A more grounded view reveals it’s much more Eastern European block housing and a lot less UN Plaza.
