May, it seems, was for the birds: I took photos of thousands of rubber ducks, one hundred plastic flamingos, and a lone Partridge.
Oscar-winning actress Shirley Jones was the keynote speaker at the Pueblo YWCA Ninth Annual Tribute to Women. The elegant Miss Jones sat down with Nick Bonham and I for a short interview. I chimed in with a couple questions about “Elmer Gantry” and was tempted to trot out my dubious Burt Lancaster imitation. I also wanted to ask if Miss Jones could point me in the direction of Albuquerque. Professionalism, however, reared its ugly head and Shirley and Nick were spared from my unique brand of humor.
I also met Anne Feeley and her riding partner Gundy Hennig during the month of May. Anne is a brain cancer survivor. She and Gundy are cycling across the U.S., trying to raise brain cancer awareness by way of their “Brains on Bikes” tour. Their route took them through Pueblo earlier this month. They stopped by the Dorsey Cancer Center at St. Mary-Corwin Hospital and visited with patients.
During the first of what seemed like a thousand graduation ceremonies I covered this May, I enjoyed a rather Spight-ful moment. Jerry Spright, age 65, received his B.A. from CSU, Pueblo May 1. I happened to be sitting near Mr. Spight’s son as he received his diploma. As soon as the father found his son in the crowd, he threw his arms up and triumphantly mouthed the word: Yes! A satisfying moment for all involved.
